Dave Grohl has singled out Pixies’ 1988 album Surfer Rosa as one of the records he considers perfect, pointing to its raw sound, unusual songwriting, and lasting influence on alternative rock.
During a recent radio appearance with Foo Fighters bandmates Pat Smear and Chris Shiflett, Grohl praised the album’s production and the way the band captured tension, humor, and noise without overcomplicating the music. He highlighted Steve Albini’s engineering, Black Francis’ lyrics, and the vocal contrast between Francis and Kim Deal as key parts of what makes the record stand out.
Surfer Rosa was Pixies’ debut studio album and helped shape the sound of late 1980s and 1990s alternative rock. Songs such as Gigantic and Where Is My Mind? became some of the band’s most recognized tracks, even as the album’s reputation grew more through influence than immediate mainstream success.
Grohl said the record still holds up after repeated listens, which says a lot about its staying power. For him, its strength is in how direct and strange it remains.
